The exhibition by Giselle Gorostiaga and Hannah Rose Stewart creates an artistic reality that analyzes the relationship between subject and world, highlighting the ways in which emotional attachments between humans and nature might develop in the future. The artworks address modern technocratic myths of civilization versus wildlife, examining microbiology, wilting flowers, and endangered species as aesthetic values while exploring the contradictory position of the human: face to face with nature, or part of it.
Giselle Gorostiaga explores our relationships with terran organisms in all their muddied, hyperlinked substances, looping threads and relays of patterning against unlimited economic growth and human exceptionalism. She references Donna Haraway's environmental keyword, sympoiesis, or "making-with": "Nothing makes itself; nothing is really autopoietic or self-organizing. In the words of the Inupiat computer 'world game,' earthlings are never alone. That is the radical implication of sympoiesis. Sympoiesis is a word proper to complex, dynamic, responsive, situated, historical systems. It is a word for worlding-with, in company."
Hannah Rose Stewart manifests within a post-digital approach to classic painting. Her work takes form as historically inspired fantasy, as liminal lost souls drifting from places of inheritance and interface. Dreams and research intertwine, becoming semi-effaced within the global network before taking form, sometimes appearing as props from an unmade movie or game. She is concerned with imagining worlds beyond the banality of capitalist realism through simulation, speculative fiction, and trend research.
