TENSION BETWEEN SYSTEMS OF AUTHORITY AND THE OPEN-ENDED MEANINGS OF VISUAL ART.
LEGAL TENDER
Visaya Hoffie’s practice moves between painting, sculpture, ceramics, printmaking, animation and craft, often brought together in immersive installations. Drawing on historical and cultural references, her work explores contemporary life through hybrid characters, humour and the possibilities of world-making.For her current body of work, developed during her residency at the Cité Internationale in Paris, Hoffie transformed daily ink drawings into paintings on raw linen and discarded cardboard packaging. Legal Tender reflects on movement between places, personal and cultural displacement, and the tension between systems of authority and the open-ended meanings of visual art.
